Campus Enhancement Project: Gateway Plaza

This inviting green space, complete with a stunning paver concourse and outdoor stage, has become known as the “town square” of the East bank. Situated south of the McNamara Alumni Center, Gateway Plaza provides everything visitors, students, and University faculty and staff need to sit back and relax—lush areas of lawn, shade trees, benches and tables topped with maroon and gold umbrellas. In 2014, the Plaza was enhanced by the addition of outdoor sculptures created by world-class artist Tony Smith. The Gateway Plaza plays host to a wide variety of activities including the University’s Farmers Market, student musical groups, departmental staff picnics, football gameday pre-game parties and more.

The University Gateway Corporation gifted the Gateway Plaza to the University of Minnesota in 2006. Activation of the Gateway Plaza is led by UGC’s Building Management and Event staff.
